CAL FIRE
Overview of Actions
ARC Forestry conducted prioritized treatment mapping, field verification of treatment units, and developed the Camp Butano Creek California Vegetation Treatment Program (CalVTP) Project Specific Analysis (PSA), the first CalVTP PSA completed and approved in the Coastal Zone.
Through negotiations with the California Coastal Commission and other agencies, ARC Forestry supported the development of the first Public Works Plans (PWPs) in both San Mateo and Santa Cruz County, approved by the California Coastal Commission to sanction the use of CalVTP PSAs in the Coastal Zone. This effort set the stage for six other counties to pursue PWP’s in the Coastal Zone, ultimately expanding the capacity for vegetation treatments to be implemented under the CalVTP within the Coastal Zone across the state.
ARC Forestry supported treatment operations on Camp Butano Creek and the Skylark Camp from contract development to completion of operations. Both camps burned at varying severities during the 2020 CZU Lightning Complex Fire; Camp Butano Creek at low to moderate severities and Skylark Camp predominantly at high severities, experiencing high tree mortality rates in all diameters and species. To promote critical camp resilience and safety following the CZU Fire, treatments included the removal of dead, dying, diseased, and hazard trees and understory treatments to maintain habitat connectivity while reducing ladder fuels. Due to the post-fire tree mortality in Skylark Camp, extensive hazard tree evaluations, including tree marking, were conducted by ARC Forestry.
Treatment Status
Long-term permits completed to conduct treatments in perpetuity, over 100 acres of initial treatments completed to date, and 1,000’s of hazard trees were removed to increase camper safety, ultimately supporting the camps to re-open and be operational for Girl Scout activities.
